NCPA $5000 “Step and the City” College STEPDANCE Championships at Lincoln Center NYC!

February 8 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The inaugural UpStaged NCPA event—a live step competition—was a huge success! Held at the iconic Lincoln Center in New York City, 16 college step teams competed vigorously in front of a captive live audience for the coveted title of UpStaged NCPA National Champion.

“Step and the City” celebrity judges included the legendary star of Off-Broadway’s Stomp, John Sawicki, and Step Afrika CEO/founder Brian Williams. Step, talent and modeling agents were in attendance, scouting for Step Afrika and Off-Broadway’s Stomp, as well other talent and modeling castings.

The winners of the 16-team bracket-style competition were the Tufts University BlackOut Step Team, taking home the UpStaged College National Championship title after beating out Buffalo State College in the final step-off.

In addition to Tufts, the Top Six teams were recognized as NCPA College Step All-American: Buffalo State, St. John’s University, Lincoln University, Emory, and Mercy College. Over $5,000 in prize money was shared among the Top Six teams.

Featured in the films Stomp the Yard and Spike Lee’s School Daze and the documentary Step, step is rooted in African-American competitive group song and dance rituals with the entire body as an instrument to produce rhythms and sounds involving cheer, gymnastics, breakdance, drill team, and call-and-response.
